After five months in jail, my lawyer argued that the DEA had no right to prohibit Heaven because the Constitution says that only Congress shall make law. The judge agreed, and my case was dismissed. I was free to go. But the government appealed all the way to the US Supreme Court where my lawyer predicted that I would lose. Just before the Supreme Court ruling came down and facing fifteen years in prison, I disappeared. I fled to Central America where I assumed a new identity and worked on several excellent educational and community development projects. I was also stalked by a mountain lion, shot at by drug dealers, and lived for years in the jungle. And I learned that the key to a good life was to always try to do the right thing. This is an interesting tale that at times is hard to believe is all true -- lots of action and interesting places. Widdowson makes the point about the absurdity of the "War on Drugs" that led to his adventures. A good read.
Such an engaging story. Couldn't put it down. A fascinating adventure that gives an important inside perspective on the "war on drugs" and criminal "justice" system. Seems potent to have lived a life like this, and sharing the story with others makes it more so.
I read about Rob's story in the Albuquerque Journal a couple of years ago. So glad he wrote this wonderful book of his experience! This is a fantastic read and story and I could hardly put it down. I think I binge-read it in one night. Would give it 10 stars if I could!
I purchased this book because I knew the author many years ago. Once I got into the book, I couldn't put it down! I found it amazing that anyone lived Bob Widdowson's life -- and even more amazing that anyone survived it! Part of the book was a necessary technical explanation, part made me question the common sense of a intelligent young man, part was heart-wrenching, part was just plain sad & part showed such compassion for others. All these parts together made for a good read!! I must also admit, it made me think just how boring my life has been -- but in a good way!
I was at Bowdoin College with Bob Widdowson. Fearful of alcoholism in his family he kept a case of Coca Cola under his bed, and to my knowledge never touched alcohol until senior year - a fateful move. He was accepted at Jefferson Medical School and the last I head of him, he had either dropped out or been forced out. I bought the book with no knowledge of what to expect, and found that I couldn't put it down. Bob's is an amazing tale of a medical school drop out who moves on to graduate work in biochemistry, which leads to his developing a synthetic drug - the "heaven" of the book title, to becoming a fugitive from the feds in Belize where he does all kinds of good things for the people of Belize, to federal prison, and finally to redemption and a much deserved serenity. I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. It is a gripping account of an amazingly complicated life, and I recommend it without reservation.
A gripping and at times hair-raising tale that engenders a flood of thoughts and emotions regarding issues of meaning, morality and a plethora of social and legal issues. On the surface, at tale that reflects on so many of the sons and daughters of the 'greatest generation' (what a crock) and the legacy of hypocrisy, pain and confusion they left to their baby boomer children. The book is disjointed in parts but that is part of its allure, and it moves quickly and enjoyably from one life project to another, as the author and we search for a common theme beyond the surface attraction of action, anti-authoritarianism, rebellion and the search for love. There is detail on the making of illicit drugs that some will find fascinating and others repelling, especially the social engineering and deceit involved in obtaining the products and locations required to make and market psycholytic substances. You want to try and reduce this welter of contradictory life choices into something good or bad but the book forces us to go beyond simple distinctions and judgements and at its best, it causes one to question one's own choices and to wonder about the relative value of order vs.chaos and how we both succumb to and overcome the heritage of our family and of our own place in history. The book does not so much end as it sets the stage for yet another phase of life, and we leave so tied to the author and his internal struggles that we cannot help but to wish him the best possible ending to this remarkable life.
This is a very enjoyable book written by an old friend based upon his most unusual experiences in life. A good deal of it is taken from detailed journals Robert kept during various phases of his journey through life starting with early adulthood. Very few folks have ever experienced the adventures he has had ... and documented so well in the book. In the early 1960s Robert and I were next door neighbors during summers spent on Cape Ann, Gloucester, Massachusetts, followed by being fraternity brothers at Bowdoin College, capped with me sharing an apartment with him and three other of his med school classmates in Philadelphia during 1969. His is a unique individual with an incredibly high intellect and creative genius.
He has done a terrific job writing his story(ies) in a style that is easy to read. The paperback version of the book is of high quality and in a font size that makes it an easy read.
